Resident Assistant

The position of a Resident Assistant (R.A.) in a residence hall at Keuka College is both a responsibility and a challenge. In being appointed to that position, confidence and trust will be placed in the Resident Assistant to fulfill certain obligations during the academic year, typically mid-August through graduation day in May, in exchange for the cost of a single room at the double room rate for the academic year.

Compensation Package:

  • A ten percent (10%) discount on all merchandise from the Keuka College Bookstore (this does not include the purchase or rental of textbooks).
  • Waiving of the resident technology fee.
  • Waiving of the fee for a parking sticker.
  • Minimum monetary compensation of $2,985/academic year. (approximately $165.83 /pay period)
  • A $1,785 credit will be placed against your room charge (academic year).

 

Essential Responsibilites:

  1. Attend provided/necessary trainings and other meetings to support effectiveness within the position as required, including but not limited to fall training in August and winter renewal in January/February.
  2. Comply with the Keuka College Student Code of Conduct and College policies, as well as federal, state and local laws.
  3. Adhere to and enforce all College policies. Submit appropriate documentation by 8:00 a.m. the morning after violations occur.
  4. Attend two in-services each semester from a pre-determined list of options (a total of 4 workshops over the course of the academic year/time of employment). These sessions will be a combination of residence life discussions, campus wide offerings, and social interaction whose content is designed to expand the knowledge and experiences of student staff and build connections within the department.
  5. Attend weekly hall staff meetings and periodic all-campus staff meetings.
  6. Assume on-duty responsibilities each week. This will involve designated times to be in the hall and available for all hall responsibilities include desk coverage. During special weekends (i.e. Green & Gold Weekend, Spring Weekend, and May Day Weekend) the R.A. may be required to be on duty with the purpose of providing extra coverage in the residence halls.
  7. Maintain daily contact with the Resident Director of his/her building.
  8. Report hall maintenance through the established work-order system.
  9. Respond to emergency situations as they arise within residence halls.
  10. Be available to students within his/her unit on a regular basis. This involves spending as much time as possible in the hall.
  11. Notify and receive permission from his/her Residence Director if he/she plans to be away from his/her building overnight.
  12. Cooperate fully with his/her Resident Director and other Resident Assistants in the living unit to establish a satisfactory atmosphere for academic and social concerns.
  13. Serves as an extension of the Office of Student Affairs by guiding, advising, and assisting students in his/her living unit.
  14. Maintain on-going communications with the Senior Director of Student Affairs in all areas pertaining to his/her position.
  15. Participate in, help facilitate, and support R.A. Training Initiatives, R.A. Selection, and Housing Selection as requested.
  16. Build a community with residents of his/her floor and building through providing and participating in community development programs/opportunities (each R.A. is to complete at least 10 programs total, with at least 4 programs in the fall semester). Programs must meet all requirements as stated in the Wellness model.
  17. Share in the responsibility for closing and opening of his/her hall during the recess periods. Exceptions must be cleared through his/her direct supervisor. The R.A. is expected to check out his/her floor completely at the end of each academic semester.
  18. Stay until the day of graduation and help with Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises as needed.
  19. Act as a role model for other students, realizing this may involve restriction of one’s personal behavior.
  20. Other duties as assigned by the Resident Director or the Senior Director of Student Affairs.

Please note: This outlines the basic obligations as a Resident Assistant. The Resident Director or the Senior Director of Student Affairs may have other expectations of the Resident Assistant for a specific floor, residence hall, or area. There may be other duties assigned as deemed necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be in good academic and judicial standing at Keuka College.
  • Must carry an academic course load of at least 12 credit hours during the period of employment; exceptions must be approved by the Senior Director of Student Affairs prior to registration.
  • Must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 during the period of employment. If the minimum grade point average is not attained, the R.A. may be granted a one-term probation period to return to the minimum standards.
  • May not assume any paid off-campus responsibilities outside the Resident Assistant position without prior approval from the Senior Director of Residence Life.
  • Lived in the Keuka College residence halls a minimum of one semester, preferred.
  • Preferred leadership experience.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Evening and weekend hours required.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
