Position Description
 
PPG Industrial Coatings produces coatings for appliances, agricultural and construction equipment, consumer electronics, automotive parts, residential and commercial construction, wood flooring and many other finished products.
 
The Building Products Interior and Exterior Products Technical team located at the Springdale, PA Coatings Plant provides customer and manufacturing support, along with product development efforts for the business segments that provide these products into the Extrusion, Joinery, and Interior Wood markets. The successful candidate will be on the team that specifically supports the Extrusion market.  A successful candidate having the proper credentials of technical and supervisory experience may also be given responsibility to provide technical leadership for the team.  Products for this market are based on well-established solvent borne platforms that are applied to aluminum extrusions
 
Located in Springdale, PA (Pittsburgh, PA suburb) and reporting to the Technical Manager, Building Products Interior and Exterior, the Development Chemist will be a seasoned professional with a broad understanding of the formulation of coatings. S/he operates within a well-established framework, receiving only periodic direction from the manager who sets product development goals and time frames.  Within that framework, they will see that the experimental work necessary to meet project goals established in lab requests is carried out and reported back to the individuals that initiated the request.  They will also be asked to support the Commercial and Manufacturing teams in solving problems that take place at customers and in the manufacturing process.
 
Resources utilized to assist in this technical position will include past technical experiences; literature reviews; patent searches and consultation with other individuals which may include resin (synthesis) chemists, physical & analytical chemist, and manufacturing personnel.  Prior knowledge and use of Tandem would be beneficial to the successful candidate.  Customer input, which has been channeled through the Commercial and Technical Service teams will be integrated to coordinate work to modify formulation procedures accordingly to achieve success in the marketplace. Such coordination extends to several simultaneous projects at various stages of completion. Occasional visits to customer locations may be deemed necessary.
 
Major Accountabilities:
  • Lead and organize project goals, project team, set milestones and deliver results against aggressive timelines
  • Develop and test new ideas directed at improving coatings properties to add value through improved performance.
  • Meet regulatory requirements, reduced cost or improved efficiency in manufacturing or application.
  • Interact with product management and marketing to propose new projects targeted at the Extrusion market segment to provide growth opportunities for the business.
  • Perform DOE’s, formulation and problem solving to technical projects.
  • Gain and understanding of coating manufacturing as it relates to the production of coating formulations.

Required or Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS in a technical/engineering field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Coatings Science, or Chemical Engineering
  • At least five (5) years of chemist experience within the Coatings Industry

Preferred Qualifications (in addition to Required Qualifications)

  • Chemist experience with solvent borne formulations
  • Supervision experience leading teams, projects and/or employees would be beneficial.
Functional and Technical Skills
Demonstrated track record of relevant work experience in a dynamic environment with competing priorities. Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead a team of chemist and technicians. Strong ability to interact and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
