The Deli Clerk is responsible for waiting on and servicing customers at the Deli service counter. This includes the use of slicers and entering SLU’s manually into the scales. He/she is responsible for packaging product in plastic bags when necessary. Product is handed directly to the customer across the counter. He/she must also fill products into the service case, self-service cases, and other display areas and may perform department closing procedures at night. Deli clerks also do preparation of food products including both cold and hot foods such as rotisserie and fried chicken as well as cooked and uncooked foods. He/she must maintain product quality by reviewing codes and rotating product. He/she must maintain the deli area in a clean/sanitary and visually appealing manner.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
This position reports to: Deli Manager, Lead PM Deli clerk (where applicable) or Designated Deli person-in-charge.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work in a courteous manner in a fast paced multi functional environment with other people or alone.
Operate deli-slicing equipment. This requires significant repetitive motion.
Wait on customers from behind deli service cases, process verbal orders (including weighing and pricing), and deliver orders to customers from across the counter.
Must work efficiently and carefully while performing all duties.
Visually identify product and SLU code; manually enter into the scale for pricing.
Read display terminal and other documents when necessary.
Take verbal orders over the telephone and write down pertinent information.
Place product into or remove product weighing up to 20 lbs. from refrigerated cases.
Work safely with electronic slicing equipment, ovens, fryers and other deli machinery.
Replenish product weighing up to 35 lbs. from the cooler to the display case.
Prepare food product to be displayed in cases (Rotisserie, Fried Chicken, etc.).
Lift and load 5-45 lb. cases onto stock carts and transport cart to appropriate area.
Interact and communicate with others in a courteous and professional manner including greeting and thanking customers.
Deal with some potentially difficult situations (such as dissatisfied customers).
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Perform seafood clerk functions.
Preparing special customer requests such as platters.
Lift and load product weighing up to 70 lbs.
Sweep, clean up, and sanitize workstation as assigned by supervisor.
Cleaning and sanitizing equipment, utensils, and other supply items.
Clean display cases and fill supplies when needed.
Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to be friendly, courteous, tactful and maintain composure in dealing with customers, co-workers, and vendors.
Ability to frequently reach, lift, stack and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 40 lbs., within the range of floor level to overhead. Ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks, flat bed carts and four wheel carts. Ability to operate related equipment such as: cutters, pricing guns, order entry machines, balers, and compactors.
Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk and move rapidly, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and kneel frequently. Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are necessary.
Mental alertness is necessary to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities and to do repetitious work accurately.
Occasional exposure to 28 degrees Fahrenheit while handling products in the cooler. Hands are frequently exposed to 30 degrees Fahrenheit while handling product in the display cases. Exposure to potential hazards exists with respect to equipment, tools and work aides necessary to perform job duties. Work environment consists of a backroom receiving area and a temperature controlled store environment.
