Purpose

The Assistant Sales Manager will support the Sales Manager in maximizing the performance the applicable categories/subcategories. Assist in planning, developing, and implementing the department merchandising and operational strategy regarding promotional pricing, variety, product presentation, and logistics to maximize sales and contributions for the applicable categories. Ensures the coordination and success of department’s category management efforts across Division. Provides merchandising support for stores and operating staff.

Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities

• Ad/Promo Responsibilities: Compiles market and consumer information to identify local opportunities. Monitors performance/compliance. Supports the management of weekly ad/promo processes and display execution. Assists in post-promo analysis. Analyzes competitive ads/promotional activities and review programming effectiveness vs. competition.
• Assortment Responsibilities: Provides input for national items. May manage local vendors and hybrids. Provides performance feedback on items. Manages selection, discontinue and markdown for local items. Gives local feedback on Planograms (POGs) and Flowograms (FOGs). Ensures execution of POGs and FOGs according to their specifications and requirements.
• Planning Responsibilities: Provides input and local insight into the Category Plan. Identifies local opportunities. Reviews local competitive relevance activity and provides recommendations to set strategies across categories.
• Pricing Responsibilities: Provides input into pricing strategies. Executes regular and promo retail pricing activities in compliance with the Company pricing strategies.
• Sourcing Responsibilities: May participate in the management of local vendor relationships and forecasts. In the fresh departments, helps manage local commodities.
• Marketing Responsibilities: Interfaces with marketing partners to actualize consumer-centric programs and promotions.
• Operations Responsibilities: Works with operations to strengthen the linkage between merchandising and the stores.
• Procurement Responsibilities: Interfaces with procurement and logistics to ensure satisfactory in stock and to optimize/maximize service levels. May assist in meetings with buyers and schematic personnel to review items accepted and items to be discontinued. May assist in meetings with space management to review schematics based on category closing schedule.

Job Requirements

Relevant Experience, Education, Certification, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Assistant Store Director Experience for one year or more preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree required. Relevant work experience required.
• Must have a strong knowledge base in supermarket retail and an understanding of consumer behavior in relation to product performance; must carry a detailed understanding of cause-effect relations between operational levers and performance (assortment/price vs. volume/margins).
• Ability to plan for the medium term; experience in successfully monitoring performance; strong client management skills, particularly working with vendors; ability to partner with the division as a team
• Must be able to adapt to competitor and/or market shifts; must be able to learn/adapt quickly to changes and cooperate/promote partnerships with other divisions, departments, corporate Merchandising, etc.
• Must have a sound fundamental understanding of sales forecasting and planning at the division level.
• Must have been in current role for more than 1 year.

Physical Environment

• Most work is performed in a temperature controlled environment.
• Incumbent may sit for long periods of time at desk or computer terminal.
• Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment in the course of normal workday.
• Position may require work during “non-traditional” hours including evenings and weekends.
• Position may require some travel, including occasional overnight/weekend travel.
