The Technical Manager has full leadership responsibility for all aspects of the adhesives, sealants, and LASD technical laboratory at Adrian, MI.  Primary areas of responsibility include: EHS, product stewardship, Global Automotive Operating Disciplines (GAOD), Compass, Sigma Logic, Secure Launch and Customer interaction.

 

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Personnel activities inclusive of organization, staffing, motivation, direction and training.
  • Laboratory operations i.e. protection of the integrity of all formulations, Customer-specific adhesive development, Customer-specific LASD development, analytical services, corrosion testing, pilot laboratory for scale-up, Customer technical requests, resolving Customer problems, and evaluation of samples processed at Customer plants.
  • Complete the development and commercialization of potential new products transferred from the Allison Park A&S Research Group and/or the A&S technology platform teams. This development process involves product modification and testing to meet and assure compliance with specific Customer requirements for physical properties, application, and corrosion resistance.
  • Interact constructively with the Allison Park research organization to identify possible test-drill technology opportunities and cultivate ideas for and generated by the idea bank. 
  • Close collaboration with the St. Just technical lab will also be required to share technical experiences and formulation practices.
  • Establish specific laboratory objectives aligned with the SBU business.
  • Review the progress being made within the technical teams and take the necessary actions to insure that the laboratory objectives are being met. 
  • Ensure visibility on all projects beyond Adrian with SBU business leadership, technology platform managers, CIC R&D teams, and Product Management.   
  • Interact constructively with the global Customer team organizations to co-develop accurate representations of the global marketplace, identify strategies to deliver on the profit potential of that marketplace (including multi-generational product planning, technology compressions, and gatekeeper projects), develop value-selling portfolios for the technologies associated with the strategies, and create brand strategies and product identities for individual technologies.  
  • The Technical Manager is an active member of the Global Technology Leadership Team.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or equivalent with at least 10 years experience in a PPG technology organization.
  • 5 years' experience as a supervisor/manager of technical personnel and R&D activities.
  • Demonstrated experience and success handling customer contact situations.
  • Certification in Sigma logic, project management or demonstrated experience in successfully managing projects.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential.
  • Strong IT skills and proven experience in managing budgets.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct Adhesives and Sealant background or, at a minimum, a good understanding of the technologies involved in Automotive.
