The Polymers Innovation Team Chemist performs specialized and advanced analyses, testing, and formulation of new products and requirements. Responsibilities may include developing new or updated formulas, performing moderate or sub-sets of large projects, and determining quality standards. The Chemist performs advanced projects, generally working with expanding existing technology, and having general expertise regarding product lines and application methods.
 
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
• Design, synthesis and characterization of patent protected polymers and formulation systems
• Plans and leads new product development projects and the commercialization process based on project objectives and timelines
• Product development activities include:
·        polymer development, modification and testing of new coating systems
·        Manufacturing support of new product scale-up
·        Communication of results and conclusions, written and/or verbal,  to Technical, Business and Operations groups as necessary
• Oversees and/or serves as the primary contact for highly technical and complex questions and concerns from plants, research professionals, quality control, customers and other internal and external parties regarding development, applications, quality assurance and related programs and services.
• Works within a team environment and with  members of the technical, sales and manufacturing departments to provide solutions to customer problems.
• Reads and interprets patents and regulations, examine new product concepts and technology, and determines how to improve or utilize technologies.
• Utilizes and promotes the use of design tools including DOE and DFSS methodologies.
• Works safely and maintains a neat laboratory area.
• Maintains and operates a variety of laboratory equipment in a safe and efficient manner. 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

1. FORMAL EDUCATION:
• Required:
1.  PhD in Polymer Chemistry or similar degree

 

2. KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
a. Required:
• 3 or more years’ experience in a laboratory
• Polymer synthesis experience
b. Preferred:
a. 3-5 years of industry experience

 

3. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to sit, stand, hear, and see on a constant basis.
• Must be able to walk, write, and type on a frequent basis.
• Must be able to climb and descend stairs.
• Must be able to bend, carry, reach, push, and pull on an occasional basis.
• May work indoors and outdoors as needed. Exposure to heat up to 120 degrees and cold to 0 degrees.
• Some travel to other locations, meetings and/or seminars is required.
• Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.
• May work in areas where toxic, flammable, and hazardous materials are present.
• Work surfaces may include concrete.
• Employee must be able to operate a computer and communicate via telephone.
• Employee must be able to tolerate non-toxic paint odors and be able to wear a respirator as required.
• May work in areas where noise level is such that hearing protection is required. 
• May be exposed to varying amounts of dust and dirt.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

4. TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
a. Required:
• Organizational skills.
• Accuracy and attention to detail.
• Development, formulation and testing.
• Strong problem solving skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to develop and present detailed complex presentations to upper management and customers.
• Proven track record of successful new polymer development, scale up and commercialization.
• Highly motivated with proven ability to work well in a team setting.
• Strong leadership capabilities with minimal supervision.
• Industry experience preferably in the development, formulation and testing of polymer-based coating systems.


b. Preferred
a. Knowledge of DOE and DFSS.
b. Green Belt preferred.
c. Experience with water-based technology


Travel: Up to 15% Domestic Travel


Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment
  • Must have polymer synthesis experience
  • PhD in Polymer Chemistry or similar from accredited university
