Reports To: Director of Labor Relations and Employment Law

 

Job Overview:

Works with the Director of Labor Relations and Employment Law regarding all labor relations matters and related employee relations matters in their designated area. Joins the Director of Labor Relations and Employment Law in labor negotiations and will work on labor contract administration. Will advise operations managers on a broad range of employment regulations, their impact on workplace incidents, and general methods of positive employee relations, and coordinate the company’s labor relations practices within this policy.  May represent the Employer in arbitrations and before the National Labor Relations Board. Responds to union organizing activity, training managers on employee relations matters including CCN (card check neutrality) campaigns and will be responsible for handling union organizing activity.

 

Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

•Counsels human resources professionals and all levels of operations in areas of discipline and discharge, performance management, ADA / FMLA, and collective bargaining agreement interpretation. 

•Prepares and negotiates initial and renewal labor agreements in accordance with company mandate.   Drafts contract proposals and counterproposals and prepares agreements for final signature by the parties.  Prepares and distributes contract settlement summaries to management.

•Creates presentations to inform executive team regarding labor and employment issues.

•Handles arbitrations and unfair labor charges.

•Manages outside counsel in handling of employment and labor litigation.

•Conducts training on full range of labor and employment issues.

•Prepares briefs.

•Contributes to company-wide standardized practices, processes and forms.

•Provides management training related to Positive Employee Relations (PER) and other timely topics.

•Provides consultation with regards to National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), grievances and arbitrations.

•Ensures legal compliance by reviewing federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and disseminating, explaining, and consulting regarding requirements.

•Manages union contracts as well as union relationships.

•Supports Director of Labor Relations in collective bargaining, with eventual first-chair responsibilities.

•Prepares for and assists line management in dealing with potential labor disputes, strikes and other concerted activity, including advising management on appropriate course of action involving satisfactory resolution of disputes, along with other related matters such as security and employee considerations.

•Provides insights on trends, patterns and translate into proactive proposals and collaborate with other departments and external vendors to develop and deliver proposed components on-time and within budget.

•Represents the company in matters involving the EEOC, IDHR, Illinois Department of Labor, Cook County Commission on Human Rights, City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

•Engages on company healthcare plan design.

•Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

 

Job Requirements:

•Must be a licensed attorney with J.D. from an accredited law school.

•3 – 6 years of experience in employment and labor law litigation and counseling, either within a law firm or as in-house counsel.  .

•Working knowledge of Title VII, ADEA, ADA, FMLA, and National Labor Relations Act. 

•Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

•Proven ability to create a productive environment that promotes initiative, innovation, continual learning and development of key personnel for future advancement.

•Ability to manage competing priorities between multiple business units.

•Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of employment principles, practices and applicable regulations.

•Demonstrated leadership, change management, and success in planning, leading and driving change in the organization while meeting or exceeding business objectives.

•Demonstrated business savvy to effectively communicate and work with other executives in support of achieving business goals.

•Some travel may be required.
