Job Summary: Responsible for ordering, maintaining and selling live goods and other garden items; merchandising, providing technical guidance to patrons and staff; customer service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides technical guidance and instructions to customers in the selection, placing, planting and follow-up care of live goods.
Is proficient in insect and plant problems and diseases, insecticides, and chemicals; provides guidance and corrective and preventative assistance to customers, recommends products.
Conducts seminars and "how to" clinics on planting and maintaining live goods, lawn installation and maintenance, pond building, and landscaping and other yard projects.
Conducts regular technical and product knowledge training for staff. Responsible for ensuring sales associates are properly trained in all areas especially care of live goods and use of chemicals, organic, etc.
Responsible for in stock position. Ensures timely and seasonal deliveries of live goods, organics, seeds, chemicals and building materials. Works directly with vendors. Ensures levels are appropriate to sales velocity. Responsible for anticipating seasonablity of merchandise and responding with proper merchandise in the proper levels.
Ensures all goods are properly merchandised and signed. Trains staff.
Schedules deliveries of nursery stock and bulk items; assists and directs offloading.
Ensures inventory is properly maintained.
Designs landscapes for customers.
Ensures garden center is appropriately staffed at all times.
Must be a Virginia Certified Nurseryman or Master Gardener.
Must be forklift certified
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: One year of responsible experience in retail sales store work or other work that demonstrated the ability to perform the duties of the position.
AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: 18 months experience in retail sales performing duties of the position including work that required knowledge of lawn and garden products such as providing guidance to customers: in the selection, placing, planting and care of live goods; use of insecticides, and chemicals to resolve insect and plant problems and diseases; planting and maintenance of live goods, lawn installation and maintenance, pond building, landscaping and other yard projects.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Study completed in a college, university, junior college, technical school or other comparable institution above the high school level may be substituted on the basis of one-half academic year of study for 6 months of general experience; specialized experience may be substituted for general experience.
